Hyde Park farmers market returns
HYDE PARK - The return of summer brings with it the return of the
Hyde Park Farmers Market. Co-sponsored by the Hyde Park Chamber of
Commerce and Scenic Hudson, the market is essentially organized and run
by Paul and Dot Chenevert, owners of the Green Oak Florist.
This summer will mark the third consecutive year that the town will
offer a farmers market and according to Paul Chenevert, this year will
feature more vendors than ever.
"So far we have received commitments from 18 vendors," said Chenevert
during the announcement period of a recent regular town meeting.
"We hope the event will be bigger than ever," he said.
The market will open on June 7 and run through Oct. 25. It takes place
on Saturdays only, opening at 9 a.m. and running through the morning
until 2 p.m. The site of the market is the Hyde Park Drive-in Movie
Theater, across Route 9 from the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Historic
Site.
"I think this is a fabulous addition to our town," remarked Town
Supervisor Pompey Delafield during the meeting. "I know that I enjoy
spending part of my Saturdays just being a part of the market over there
at the drive-in."
In the past, the market has featured an array of fresh farm products,
including produce, cheese, meats, flowers and other products that local
farmers in the area create.
"It's an opportunity for Hyde Park residents to sample the amazing
products of local farms in the area," said Chenevert.
Chenevert said the Hyde Park Farmers market is the only such
organization in New York state to offer a scholarship to high school
students interested in studying agriculture.
This year's winner, Mike Cook, will utilize the gift toward paying for
his studies in environmental science at the university level.
"We are lucky that the market is successful enough that we can afford to
take a portion of the proceeds and dedicate to our children's
education," said Chenevert.
